Modern day Egyptians are often called the Arabs due to their language and Islamic traditions. There is also a truly Bedouin Arab grouping within Egypt. These nomadic tribal people roam the vast Egyptian deserts.
Today nearly half of the population lives in huge cities that are mostly overcrowded. There are about 58,5 million people living in Egypt today and although the birth rate is dropping slowly, the population explosion represents a great problem. Almost the entire population lives in the Nile Delta and Valley.
Islam is the only official religion in the country. Coptic Christians the largest religious minority and there are only one million Roman Catholics.
Arabic is the country's official language. |
